SELL SURPLUS SER AND SEU CABLE

Service entrance cable runs from the meter to the panel and from the panel to everything downstream. Leftover coils from service work are one of the most common things we are asked to quote.

Leftover project wire? Sell it now — don’t scrap it.

01 SER

SER — service entrance cable with a bare ground

SER is a 600V service entrance cable with two or three insulated conductors plus a bare ground, wrapped in an overall jacket. It is used for service laterals, panel feeders, sub-panels, range and dryer circuits, and air-conditioner disconnects.

Common constructions in Michigan include 2-2-2-4 and 4-4-4-6 aluminum, 4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum for 200 A services, and copper 6/3 and 4/3 for smaller feeders.

02 SEU

SEU — service entrance cable with a concentric neutral

SEU uses two insulated conductors with the neutral applied as bare strands wrapped concentrically around them. It is common on overhead service drops and residential services.

The concentric neutral is the identifying feature: an oval cable with exposed aluminum strands around the insulated cores. Copper SEU exists but is far less common in modern work.

03 Sizes

Sizes, lengths and packaging

  • Aluminum SER — 2-2-2-4, 4-4-4-6, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1, 4/0-4/0-2/0, 4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0.
  • Copper SER — 14/3 through 4/0 in the common configurations.
  • SEU — 6/3, 4/3, 2/3 and 1/0 through 4/0 with concentric neutral.
  • Packaging — 125, 250 and 500 ft coils are standard; larger services come on reels.

Partial coils are priced on the remaining length, which is usually written on the wrap or stated by the installer. If it is not, an estimate with a photo is enough to start.

04 Condition

What changes the quote

  • Aluminum oxidation — normal surface film is fine; heavy white corrosion into the strands is not.
  • Jacket damage — tears and cuts expose the neutral and reduce usable length.
  • Coil condition — a coil that has been dragged or run over is a handling problem.
  • Removed service cable — reviewed case by case; a service change often leaves the old run intact in length.

Photograph the printing on the jacket, which carries the configuration (for example 2-2-2-4 AL SER) and the voltage rating.

Send the details and photos once — we review the lot and come back with a real number, not a range.

What helps us quote fast

  • Cable markings and jacket legends from the reel tag
  • Total footage, reel count or an estimated weight
  • Whether the material is new surplus, unused or a partial reel
  • How a truck gets to it — dock, forklift, ground level

Most useful shots: overall reels or spools, the cable markings printed on the jacket, the reel tag or label, wire ends, and anything that shows condition. Markings and tags are what let us quote quickly.

FAQStraight answers

Questions sellers ask before they call

Do you buy aluminum SER in 2-2-2-4?

Yes, along with the other common configurations up to 4/0.

Do you buy SEU with concentric neutral?

Yes, in copper and aluminum, in coils and larger reels.

Do you buy partial coils?

Yes. Tell us the approximate remaining length; it is the main input for a partial coil quote.

Do you buy service cable removed from a service change?

Sometimes. It is reviewed on jacket condition and confirmed length, and priced differently from unused stock.
