SELL SURPLUS URD AND USE-2 CABLE

Underground distribution cable from utility projects, service upgrades and site work. Triplex and quadruplex URD in aluminum is the most common large surplus we see from outside contractors.

Leftover project wire? Sell it now — don’t scrap it.

01 URD

URD — underground residential distribution

URD is the cable buried between a transformer and a service, or between pedestals in a subdivision. It comes as triplex (two insulated conductors and a bare neutral) and quadruplex (three insulated conductors and a neutral), usually in aluminum at 600V, and as 15kV and 25kV constructions for primary distribution.

Common sizes are 2/0 and 4/0 aluminum in triplex and quadruplex, with 350 kcmil and larger in primary cable.

02 USE-2

USE-2 — direct-burial single conductor

USE-2 is a single-conductor cable rated for underground service and direct burial, commonly dual-rated with RHH or RHW-2 for conduit use. It is used for service laterals, temporary power, and equipment feeds where conduit is not practical.

Sizes run from #14 through 1000 MCM in copper and aluminum, with the larger sizes usually on reels.

03 Condition

The condition question with underground cable

Buried cable is not automatically spoiled, but it does need a closer look than warehouse stock:

  • Jacket integrity — cuts, gouges and rock damage that expose the neutral or shield.
  • Moisture — water inside an opened end can travel a long way along a stranded conductor.
  • Length — cable pulled out of the ground rarely comes back in clean lengths after cutting and pulling.
  • Identification — URD printing is often worn after burial; the cut end shows the construction.

Cable that has been in service and then removed is reviewed on its merits. Unused reels left over from a project are much simpler and are what most of our URD quotes are based on.

04 Packaging

Reels, lengths and loading

URD arrives on wooden reels, sometimes very large ones. Tell us the reel diameter and an estimated weight if you can — a full reel of 4/0 quadruplex is heavy enough that loading method decides whether a pickup is practical.

USE-2 in larger sizes is also reeled; smaller sizes may be coiled. Either is fine, but the weight and access need to be clear before a truck is sent.

Send your URD or USE-2 details

Send the details and photos once — we review the lot and come back with a real number, not a range.

What helps us quote fast

  • Cable markings and jacket legends from the reel tag
  • Total footage, reel count or an estimated weight
  • Whether the material is new surplus, unused or a partial reel
  • How a truck gets to it — dock, forklift, ground level

Most useful shots: overall reels or spools, the cable markings printed on the jacket, the reel tag or label, wire ends, and anything that shows condition. Markings and tags are what let us quote quickly.

FAQStraight answers

Questions sellers ask before they call

Do you buy triplex and quadruplex URD?

Yes, in aluminum and copper, in 2/0, 4/0 and larger.

Do you buy 15kV URD?

Yes. Primary URD is quoted as medium-voltage cable and reviewed on shield and jacket condition.

Do you buy cable dug up from a job?

Case by case. Unused reels are straightforward; removed cable is reviewed on jacket condition and confirmed length.

Do you buy USE-2 in short lengths?

Yes, if the length and size are known. Longer single lengths carry the most value.
