SELL SURPLUS MEDIUM AND HIGH VOLTAGE CABLE

One full reel of 15kV cable can be worth more than a warehouse of building wire. This is specialty material, and it deserves a quote based on construction, test history and jacket condition rather than a guess.

Leftover project wire? Sell it now — don’t scrap it.

01 Voltage classes

5kV through 69kV and above

We review cable in the common distribution classes and above:

  • 5kV and 8kV — older industrial distribution and retrofit work.
  • 15kV — the most common medium-voltage class in Michigan; substation feeders, distribution and large facility services.
  • 25kV and 35kV — utility distribution and industrial primary service.
  • 69kV and above — transmission-class cable, usually project-specific; reviewed individually.
02 Constructions

EPR, XLPE, shields and neutrals

  • Insulation — EPR (ethylene propylene rubber) or XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene), with 100%, 133% or 173% insulation levels.
  • Concentric neutral — copper wires applied helically over the insulation shield; common on URD and distribution cable.
  • Tape shield — copper tape with drain wires, used in feeder and substation cable.
  • Jackets — PVC, PE or LSZH, sometimes with a semi-conductive layer beneath.
  • Armored and lead-sheathed — industrial and legacy constructions, reviewed individually.

The construction is printed on the jacket and visible in a cut end. Both are worth photographing.

03 Test history

Test history and documentation

Medium-voltage cable is more sensitive to handling and storage than building wire. Bending radius, end sealing and moisture exposure all affect whether a reel is still usable at rated voltage.

Tell us what you know about the reel:

  • Whether it is unused factory cable or a project leftover
  • How the ends have been sealed or capped
  • Whether it has ever been energized
  • How and where it has been stored — indoors, covered outdoors, or in the weather
  • Any test records that came with it

Where documentation exists it supports the value. Where it does not, the quote reflects the uncertainty.

04 Logistics

Reel weight and loading

A full reel of 15kV 1/0 cable can weigh several thousand pounds, and larger constructions considerably more. Forklift capacity, reel diameter and truck access all matter before a pickup can be planned.

Send the reel tag or the reel dimensions and an estimated weight. If the reel has to be craned rather than forked, we need to know that before scheduling, not on arrival.

Send your MV cable details

Send the details and photos once — we review the lot and come back with a real number, not a range.

What helps us quote fast

  • Cable markings and jacket legends from the reel tag
  • Total footage, reel count or an estimated weight
  • Whether the material is new surplus, unused or a partial reel
  • How a truck gets to it — dock, forklift, ground level

Quantity and condition

Most useful shots: overall reels or spools, the cable markings printed on the jacket, the reel tag or label, wire ends, and anything that shows condition. Markings and tags are what let us quote quickly.

FAQStraight answers

Questions sellers ask before they call

Do you buy 15kV cable?

Yes, in EPR and XLPE, concentric neutral and tape shield, in full reels and long cut lengths.

Do you buy cable that has been energized?

It is reviewed individually, with the understanding that used medium-voltage cable carries more risk. Test records help.

Do you buy concentric neutral URD?

Yes, including 15kV and 25kV primary URD.

What documentation helps?

Reel tags, manufacturer test reports and any field test records. Photographs of the jacket printing and a cut end are the minimum.
